Driver crashes into Bagotstown building

A driver crashed into an under-construction house at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara early Saturday morning.

The driver managed to escape from the crash unharmed although his car was wrecked.

There were no other occupants of the car and no one else was injured.

The car, a white Toyota bearing PJJ 1679 on its licence plate, crashed into the under- construction property owned by Debbie Kaladeen, just before 5am. Several pillars collapsed and fell on top of the car, which was wedged at the side of the yard.

Stabroek News learnt that the driver not only escaped unscathed but was in a hurry to remove the certificate of fitness and licence pasted on the windshield of the car as well as other documents out of the glove compartment.

Members of Kaladeen’s family, who live in a house behind the structure, said that they were awakened by a loud screech and sudden thump just prior to 5am. They related that when they went outside they saw a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, removing the documents for the vehicle.

They said they tried to speak to the man but he refused to cooperate and was even disrespectful towards them.

They called the police, who arrived within 10 minutes.

However, they said it appeared that the driver was known to the police and the lawman was very also uncooperative with them when they tried to accompany him to the police station.

They also said the policeman told them that a breathalyser test could not be administered and that even if the man was taken to a doctor his blood alcohol level could not be discerned. They added that the officer clearly was trying his best to avoid answering any questions and hurriedly took the driver to the Providence Police Station.

The Kaladeen family said that they followed the officer on their own to the station. They said that the police then left and tried to get tow trucks to remove the car both their efforts were unsuccessful.
