at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was also charged with wounding Lomattie Ramdat, the man’s common-law wife.

It is alleged that on May 2, at Haslington, East Coast Demerara, Khan murdered Bharrat. It was further alleged that on the same day, at Haslington, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Ramdat, with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause actual bodily harm.

Khan was not required to plead to the charges but after hearing the murder charge read by Magistrate Zamila Ally, he questioned why he was the only one charged, in spite of being cautioned to remain silent. “This woman know about it,” he said, adding, “is not me alone.”

The magistrate subsequently remanded Khan and transferred the matter to the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court, where the case will be called on October 1, when a report is expected to be presented in court.

Ramdat had initially said that she and her husband were attacked by robbers but investigations uncovered evidence that suggested the attack had its genesis in the souring of relations between Khan and Ramdat. This came to light after Ramdat’s sister revealed that Ramdat’s children moved to live with her, out of fear of being attacked by the man, following threats he had made.
