Mahaica minibuses to strike come tomorrow

Route 44 (Mahaica to Georgetown) minibus operators are planning to strike tomorrow for an increase in fare to offset the high gas price.

Speaking with Stabroek news yesterday, one of the drivers stated that the decision has been made to go ahead with the strike, since they are not profiting from the present circumstances.

On Wednesday, some drivers who spoke with Stabroek news on the condition of anonymity, expressed their dissatisfaction with the current $200 fare. Operators are asking for at least 50% increase.

The cost to full their gas tanks according to the drivers, is $15,000. However they only gain $5,000 profit. “Victoria getting $200 and UG [Turkeyen] getting $100,” said one driver, as he pointed out the disparity in the distance—23 miles.

Commuters have signalled their support for the fare hike.
