GRO says provided info on Arthur Chung’s death to GECOM

The General Register Office (GRO) today said that it had provided information on the death of former President Arthur Chung to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in 2008 and this was recently acknowledged by the electoral body.

The appearance of Chung’s name on the preliminary list of voters sparked criticism of GECOM by the government and the PPP. GECOM had said it could only remove the names if the GRO provided the information but that it hadn’t supplied it. Today’s GRO statement sheds a different light on the matter.

The GRO statement follows:

The General Register Office is deeply concerned with the views being expressed in the News Media about its role in providing death returns to Guyana Elections Commission.

The General Register Office is deeply committed to its moral support role to Guyana Elections Commission by supplying timely, on a monthly basis over the years a list of all registered deaths lodged at the General Register Office unto August 2014.

See attached copy of G.R.O’s dispatch record.

The death return of Arthur Chung who resided at 49 Bel Air, Gardens, died at 49 Bel Air Gardens on 23rd June, 2008 was sent to Guyana Elections Commission in July 2008 and Guyana Elections Commission has recently so acknowledged.

The General Register Office remains morally committed to providing via its competent, efficient manual system a monthly return of all registered deaths to Guyana Elections Commission.
