New outreach arts programme looks to cleaner environment

A new outreach programme aimed at promoting development through the art forms was on Saturday launched on the streets of Georgetown with a flash mob by members of the Dominion Dance Company.

The programme, “Love what we do, do what we love”, is a community development project aimed at improving youths, Director Romelton Siland said.

For about a half of an hour, about a dozen Dominion dancers entertained passing Guyanese with dance, poetry and song. Many persons stopped and quickly got into the groove of things; several were seen clapping along, singing to the music and recording all of the performances.

According to Siland, the dance company is a diversified group that has been “pioneering in the cause to establish morals and demonstrate community living and artistic development.” He further said, “We are prepared to address the economic, social, and family matters by way of the performing and creative arts.”

Siland went on that one of the project’s aims is to “clean the city one dancer at a time”. He explained that volunteers will clean areas across the country then follow the exercise up with displays of the art forms while promoting the gospel.

The program was launched under the R.E.A.D. (Radical Establishment and Development) Centre, a non-governmental organisation which offers a multifaceted recreational and edutainment centre. Siland stated that the centre plans on launching a series of educational, edutainment, artistic and skill-based programmes that will enable youths to acquire a skill in various art forms.
