The Palms Geriatric Institution yesterday held a church service to usher in ‘Month of the Elderly’ 2014.
Month of the Elderly is celebrated in October annually and is a month set aside to acknowledge and honour the many contributions that were made by the elderly.
Under the theme: ‘Leaving no one Behind: Promoting a Society for all’ the institution has planned various activities for the month.
Shaquelle Williams, Clerk 2, in his opening remarks said, “The elderly have already set the foundation of our culture, the social system of morals and principles that we call Guyana.” Williams also reminded the gathering about the hardships that were faced by the elderly “back then” so that we can have a “better now”.
Also present at the Church Service yesterday was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Loren Baird, who said that the ministry is proud to be a part of the month long celebrations. “The older generation is the true custodians of our values, heritage and culture,” Baird said.
The institution ushered in the Month of the Elderly in style as the church service featured prayer, songs, poems and dance, some items were performed by residents of the Palms.
