Queenstown man jailed for assaulting father

A Queenstown, Essequibo Coast man was yesterday sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of assaulting his aged father.

According to the police, on August 3 Ramesh Ramana called ‘Tractor’ who works as a labourer went to his parents’ home where he lives and armed himself with a piece of wood. His aged father was sitting in a chair outside and Ramana fired a lash at his father which he barred with his walking stick. The man then tried to hit him a second time but his father fended it off by using his crutches.

The third lash however connected with the man and he fell to the ground. He then pushed him causing his father to suffer injuries.

The man shouted for help and he was assisted by his wife and neighbours. A report was made to the police and checks were made for Ramana who hid from the police.

A summons was prepared for the man but the police were unable to serve it on him and Ramana never attended court.               On October 3, a report was made that he was assaulting his father and the police were able to arrest him.

When he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce, the man said that he was drunk and could not remember why he assaulted his father.   His father and mother who were present at court asked the Magistrate to inform Ramana that he is no longer welcome at their home.

Ramana pleaded guilty to the charge and he was not represented in court. The Magistrate subsequently sentenced the man to three weeks in prison.
