Jaden Mars’ mother deeply frustrated over lack of answers from GPHC

Ten months after the death of Jaden Mars at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), the boy’s mother is yet to receive any justice and is now threatening to release private conversations between herself and health officials.

In an interview with Stabroek News, Mars’ mother Natalie Caseley explained that she is in possession of recordings that she had made during meetings with several officials.

She stated that the decision to finally come forward to the media with the evidence was made when she realized that, in less than a week, her son would have turned 5 years old.

“I got so upset this morning because my baby boy would’ve been celebrating his birthday next week and every year I would make it a big thing for him. This year there won’t be any celebrating,” Caseley said before adding, “It’s been 10 months since my son has died and nobody has given me any closure.”

Caseley says that she has about 10 recordings and has said that she has approached at least one of the high-ranking officials about their release.

Yesterday afternoon, she was promised a meeting with other officials. However, up to press time any such meeting was yet to materialize.

She is adamant that the recordings will be released if she is not met soon.

“I finally realized that I have all of this information and these people hurt me and I’m still protecting them,” she said. She went on, “It seems like I’m protecting them but they don’t care about me. I’m trying to be professional and deal with them as a human being but I’m through with that; they don’t care about my feelings and my sanity.”

Meanwhile, the mother remains on no-pay leave, even while reports reaching her indicate that three of four health personnel who were deemed culpable in her son’s death are yet to be disciplined.

These health officials were revealed to be three doctors and a nurse who had dealt with Mars prior to his death.

“I’m still on no pay leave with all the responsibilities I had while I had a job,” she said. She continued, “I was assured that these health workers would be disciplined and I was told that the Nursing and Medical Councils would not delay discipline because the investigation would’ve been completed because it was thorough.”

Caseley explained that her son’s passing still haunts her and she simply wants closure. “I’m hurting, I’m hurting so much. And as my son’s birthday is approaching I’m hurting more than ever.”

Jaden Mars, died in December 2013, days after he was admitted to the GPH for a bitten tongue. A subsequent post-mortem reported that he died after suffering multiple heart failures.
