Clerk charged with embezzling liquor, juices from employer

A 24-year-old clerk was yesterday charged with embezzling cases of beers, Guinness, juices and liquor when she appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that Amanda Spellen of Lot 14 Anna Regina, while employed as a clerk by Lorna Scott at Celebs Restaurant and Bar, Cotton Field Essequibo Coast embezzled $229,266 in stocks from the business place. The unlawful act allegedly occurred between September 14 and October 15.

According to the police, on October 16, Scott was taking an inventory when she discovered the above mentioned items missing. A report was made to the police and an investigation was launched.

Spellen was later arrested and charged.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce informed the woman that the charge was an indictable one. However, the Administration of Justice Act was applied and the matter was tried summarily.

Spellen, who was represented by Attorney Latchmie Dindyal, pleaded not guilty and her lawyer                         asked for reasonable bail to be granted to his client.

There were no objections by Police Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak and bail was set in the sum of $100,000.

The matter was adjourned to November 11.
