Four men have been charged with murdering 17-year-old miner Azaad Potter, who was fatally beaten at Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro on Tuesday.

Brothers Delroy Williams, 28 and Leroy Williams, 26 as well as Quincy King, 26, and Deonarine Khan, 42, were yesterday remanded to prison after being arraigned for the murder before city Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

It is alleged that on October 21, at the Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro, Essequibo,

they murdered Potter. The jointly-charged quartet was not required to plea when the charge was read to them.

The prosecution’s case is that on the day in question the teenager was attacked by the four men, who relieved him of his cell phone and other valuables. Police had said Potter was allegedly beaten by a group of men who had accused him of stealing articles from their mining camp.

The court heard from Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick that the deceased and the accused persons, who are all known to each other, were walking through a trail when Potter stooped to the ground to remove part of a tree which was in their path. The court heard that it was during this time that the men attacked the young man, dealing him blows about his body and relieving him of a number of his belongings.

Potter, of Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The attack was later reported to the police, which led to the men being arrested and charged.

Khan, a father of one, is being represented by attorney Hukumchand. Meanwhile, the Williams brothers, Delroy and Leroy, both of 431 Soesdyke Back Road, are being represented by attorney Dexter Todd. The older Williams has one child. Attorney Adrian Thompson represents 26-year-old Land of Canaan resident King.

The men have all been remanded to prison until January 12 of next year when their matter will be called again at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, which is responsible for the jurisdiction where the murder occurred.

According to relatives, Potter left for Konawaruk two weeks ago to work with a man known to the family.
