President hails Queen’s College on 170th anniversary

President Donald Ramotar says government plans to ensure that every education institution produces distinguished results as Queen’s College, in his address at the Opening Ceremony of the school’s 170th anniversary held on Monday.

Ramotar led a team comprising Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Education Minister Priya Manickchand and several Members of Parliament who joined Queen’s College (QC) students, alumni and teachers in celebrating the school’s anniversary.

The president noted that over the years the school has produced many students who have distinguished themselves in a number of fields. “There is hardly any sector, the economy, culture, politics that you do not find Queen’s College students…without doubt the students of Queen’s College have made tremendous contribution to the development of Guyana, Ramotar said, according to a report from the Government Information Agency (GINA).

Queen’s College should be replicated throughout Guyana, he said, adding that “We are working hard to ensure that the other schools also have a quality education….”

The president noted that three of the four students who obtained the CXC Regional Awards this year were from Queen’s College while the fourth student hailed from the New Amsterdam Secondary School.

Education has transformed Guyana and as such measures have been put in place to ensure that children in the most remote areas can access education, he said. “For the students of today, I think that you are fortunate to have many role models that have come out of this institution that you can follow, but you must not only seek to follow, but to surpass the achievements that they have made…may Queen’s College grow from strength to strength,” he said.

Queen’s College was established in 1944 as the Queen’s College Grammar School for Boys by Bishop William Piercy Austin.
