Man fined $25,000 for shoplifting from Bounty

A man who stole a quantity of cream liqueur and Magnum beverages from the Bounty Supermarket was yesterday fined $25,000 or the alternative of two weeks in prison.

Safraz Hanif accepted that on October 27 at the Bounty Supermarket, Water Street, he stole two bottles of Magnum tonics and three bottles of cream liqueur totalling $3,010 in value.The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

The prosecution’s facts are that on the day in question at about 17:40 hrs the defendant went into the store, pretending to be a customer and was later observed by a security guard placing the items in the pockets of his pants.

The court heard that after Hanif left the store, the guard confronted him and conducted a search and found the articles concealed in his pockets.

The police were summoned and Hanif was arrested and charged.

After hearing the case, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry imposed a $25,000 fine on the defendant and explained to him that in default he would be sentenced to two weeks in prison. The case was heard at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court.
