A vagrant, accused in the theft of a rabbit and a bicycle, was remanded to prison yesterday after he could not produce a fixed place of abode to a city court.
Michael Jairam denied knowledge of the charge, which stated that between October 17 and October 18, 2014, at Stabroek Market, he stole a brown rabbit, valued $3,000, and a bicycle, valued $23,000, belonging to Deborah Douglas.
The prosecutor’s case stated that on October 17, at 11pm, Douglas secured her business premises and left. The next day she returned and discovered that her rabbit and bicycle were missing. A report was made and police, acting on information, arrested Jairam, who admitted to selling the bicycle to someone on Leopold Street.
Jairam, however, maintained his innocence. He said that the rabbit was given to him by a security guard but it later died. He said he had no knowledge of the bicycle.
The court heard that Jairam sleeps under the police outpost at Stabroek Market Square and based on his failure to produce a fixed place of abode, he was remanded to prison until November 3, when the case will be called again.
