Alcoholic found dead at De Kinderen

A known alcoholic, Hemchand Ramgewan, 65, who was originally from Hubu, Parika, East Bank Essequibo, was found dead yesterday at De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara with injuries about his body.

Relatives believe that the man who had no fixed place of abode was a victim of a hit-and-run accident and that he was not murdered because he never interfered with anyone. They described him as a friendly and helpful person and said the only bad thing about him was that he was self-destructive. “He would come and ask for food and once we have we would give him,” they said.

Several years ago he started consuming alcohol heavily and would “walk all over the place,” hence he was given the nickname ‘Bird.’

The relatives said too that the man was a “rolling stone…” and would sleep on the road and on benches in front of rum shops.

They told this newspaper that sometimes he would “sweep people shop and when he get a lil hundred dollar he would use it to buy rum. He made himself like that.”

Police said in a release that they are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
