Driver released on $250,000 bail after denying causing woman’s death

The driver accused of causing the death of Carol Overton-Dawson, the woman who was fatally struck along the Mocha Access Road last Friday evening, was yesterday released on $250,000 bail after denying dangerous driving when he appeared in a city court.

It is alleged that on November 7, Delroy Beresford, of 77 Quamina Road, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, drove motor vehicle PPP 9521 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Overton-Dawson.

Beresford pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, Beresford was speeding north along the Mocha Access Road, while Overton-Dawson was walking on the northern edge of the road. He said Beresford swerved, resulting in him making contact with Overton-Dawson. Afterward, she was picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she subsequently died.

Attorney Roger Yearwood, who represented Beresford, said that despite the unfortunate incident where one life was claimed, his client assisted in taking Overton-Dawson to the hospital and also assisted the police in their investigation. As a result, Yearwood asked for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum.

Prosecutor Mangru had no objections to bail, which was eventually set at $250,000. The case was transferred to Court Two, where it will be called on November 24.
