Fisherman fined $30,000 for punching wife in her eye

A 49-year-old fisherman of Bounty Hall, Essequibo Coast was yesterday fined $30,000 after he admitted that he assaulted his wife causing her actual bodily harm.

Kulraj Jilwah who was not represented in court was charged before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

According to the police, on September 26 around 3 am, Kowsilla Mangal, Jilwah’s wife was in her bed when he asked her about $300 that she had removed from his pants’ pocket the day before. She told him that he would get the money later, but he became angry and then dealt her a cuff to her left eye causing it to bleed. She was able to escape and ran to neighbours for help.

The matter was reported to the police and the man was later arrested.

When asked by the magistrate why he assaulted his wife, Jilwah said that he was drunk and was very sorry for his behaviour.

The fine was then imposed on the man or an alternative of 3 weeks in jail.
