Cocaine dealer gets three years

A man was sentenced to three years in jail yesterday after admitting to having cocaine in his possession for sale.

Shawn Charles, 38, a vendor, was also fined $30,000 after he pleaded guilty to possession of two grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The drug was found by police on Wednesday during a search of the home he shared with Alexis Welcome, at Leopold and Cross streets, Werk-en-Rust.

Welcome, who was charged with Charles, pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison.

Charles told the court that he was selling cocaine and it belonged to him and not Welcome.

Prosecutor Michael Grant told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts that ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch made contact with both Charles and Welcome at their house. They were both told of the reason for police being there and a search was requested. During the search, Grant said, the suspected cocaine was found in a plate in a northern bedroom of the house.

The couple was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, in Georgetown, where the cocaine was weighed in their presence.
