Stevedore burglary accused on bail

An excavator operator was yesterday granted $100,000 bail after he denied stealing just under $1M in goods during a break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that between November 8 and November 9, at Stevedore, Georgetown, Carl Woodman, 20, of 3514 Stevedore Housing Scheme, broke and entered the dwelling house of Nigel McKenzie and stole a quantity of items amounting to a total of $833,000.

Woodman pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on November 8, McKenzie secured his home and left for work, leaving all the articles intact. However, at about 4:30am on November 9, when he returned home, he discovered the back window was wrenched open and upon checking he discovered the articles missing. He later made a report to the police, who, acting on information received, arrested Woodman.

Grant said he admitted that he and another person broke into the house of McKenzie and stole the articles. However, nothing was recovered.

Woodman, however, told the court yesterday that he never admitted to the crime as was stated. Prosecutor Grant had no objections to bail, which was set at $100,000 and Woodman was ordered to return to court on November 28 for statements.
