Large buildup of traffic after Berbice bridge malfunctions

The Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) advised this evening that it encountered difficulties in reclosing the bridge after a scheduled passage of an ocean going vessel, a release from the Ministry of Public Works said.

The difficulties encountered are thought to be of an electronic nature.

Technicians from the BBCI along with assistance from Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) and Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) technicians are working to resolve the difficulty.

This problem has resulted in a large buildup of vehicular traffic on both banks of the Berbice River.

The Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) passenger barge the Bonasika has been mobilised to assist in moving commuters between New Amsterdam and Rosignol at the T & HD facilities there.

Additional vessels will be brought into service to help alleviate this situation by Saturday morning.  Until this matter is resolved, only essential travel is advised.
