Port Kaituma woman charged with embezzling over $1M

A Port Kaituma woman has been charged with embezzling over $1 million from her former employer.

Latoya Wilson, 24, of Citrus Grove, Port Kaituma, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to her by Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown yesterday.

She was released on $200,000 bail after an application by her attorney.

It is alleged that between June 13 and November 17, 2014, at Port Kaituma, North West District, being a clerk to Welton Clarke, her employer, Wilson fraudulently embezzled $1,082,000.

Her attorney, Latchmie Rahamat, made an application for reasonable bail to be granted and told the court that Wilson was employed at Beacon Office, located in Port Kaituma, for over one year. Rahamat added that from the information she received, her client did not embezzle any money and she was not the only clerk involved in handling the money at the time of the fraud.

Rahamat noted that Wilson also cooperated with the police throughout the period since she was charged and emphasised that she will return for her trial.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objections to bail but asked for it to be granted in a substantial sum because of the amount that was involved in the case.

After listening to the submissions presented in the court, the magistrate granted bail to Wilson on the condition that she reports to the officer-in-charge of the Port Kaituma Police Station on the last Friday of every month.

The matter is adjourned until February 2, 2015, when it will be called at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
