Residents not pleased with temporary fix of Charity breach

The Charity River defence dam which was breached on Friday last as a result of the spring tides was temporarily fixed by the Regional Democratic Council, but residents of the area are hoping that permanent works can be done soon.

At around 3 pm on Friday last the water from the Pomeroon River started to run over the dam leaving residents fearful that the entire village would have been flooded.

Swift action was promised by officials and two loads of mud were delivered to the area on Friday afternoon and bags were filled and placed on top of sandbags that residents had placed there earlier.

A team from the Sea and River Defence unit was expected to visit the area on Saturday but this publication was told by residents that no one showed up.

In an invited comment, Regional Chairman Parmanand Persaud said he had no knowledge of the team visiting the area, but that permanent work was expected to soon commence on the dam.

“I was told that the water has stopped running over the dam but again we will proceed with permanent works soon,” he said.

However when this publication visited the area, water was seen escaping through crevices and was still running over into the nearby trench.

“The mud bags will just stop the water for a lil time,” one angry resident stated. “You nah see the water still running over? I believe that they should get work done there soon. They will have to paal off there or something. No proper work was done.

Look how much mud still lef there. Is when this whole Charity flood then they gon hurry to do permanent work and dah gon be too late.”
