Lithuania appoints first ambassador to CARICOM

The Baltic state of Lithuania has appointed Raimonda Murmokaite as its first ambassador to CARICOM since its breakaway from the former Soviet Union 24 years ago.

According to a CARICOM press release, the accreditation took place on November 17. In welcoming the Ambassador, Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM, Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan, said it was an honour.

More so, as an ambassador to the United Nations (UN) for her country, Soeknandan said, Murmokaite is already familiar with the issues affecting CARICOM such as climate change, disaster relief and preparedness, energy, tourism, information and communication technologies for education and the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

In response, Murmokaite said she was pleased to work with the CARICOM Secretariat as her country’s first ambassador and is already familiar with and has a good relationship with the CARICOM Ambassadors to UN.

More than that, Murmokaite said, the CARICOM UN representatives are very good at making the voices of small countries heard.
