Husband remanded on charge of choking wife

A husband was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with choking his wife and shoving her to the floor.

The allegation against Godfrey Eastman is that on November 26, at Cummings Park, East Coast Demerara, he choked his wife and pushed her down after an argument. Eastman pleaded guilty to the charge but a not guilty plea was recorded for him after he denied the prosecution’s account of the assault.

Prosecutor John Singh said that Eastman’s wife was washing when he approached her and started cursing her about her past. The woman did not pay much attention to him and this made him even angrier and he allegedly grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the floor.

The attack was reported to the police and an investigation was conducted and the man was arrested.

Although his wife was hoarse when she addressed the court about the attack, Eastman, however, told the court that what the prosecutor said was not true. Magistrate Alex Moore subsequently remanded him to prison after recording a not guilty plea on his behalf. The case will be called again at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on December 16.
