Agricola woman critical after being hit by truck

An elderly woman is now battling for her life in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was hit by a sand truck on the Agricola Public Road early yesterday morning.

“We are hoping for the best. The doctors say she’s at a fifty-fifty…they don’t know if she will make it,” Amani Jamal told Stabroek News.

Her mother, Fatima Jamal, 62, of Lot 181 Caesar Street, Agricola, was struck by the truck while she was crossing the road to go home. She had just finished work at the Alpha Hotel in Agricola and was half way across the road when she was hit, Amani said.

The driver of the truck was speeding and her mother “didn’t have time to finish crossing,” the woman added, while noting that her mother was always careful when crossing the road and would even tell them not to cross recklessly.

Amani added that her mother suffered severe injuries to her head and doctors are prevented from performing an emergency surgery because her blood pressure was too high. “They seh if the pressure ain’t stable, they can’t do nothing. My mother can’t talk and as the time go by her head swelling…,” she added.

The driver of the truck was arrested and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
