Teen jailed for theft

A young man will be in jail for the next two years after he pleaded guilty to two charges of simple larceny last Friday.

Joshua Joseph, 18, who told the court that he was a farmer and was also employed on contract with the government’s Clean-Up My Country campaign, pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on November 18, on Leopold Street, he stole a stereo set valued $150,000 from Jermaine Peters.

Joseph was also charged with stealing a DVD player, worth $20,000, from Peters on October 16. He denied stealing the DVD player. “I was playing a CD when the DVD set burn. I took it to repair and it is still there,” the young man told the court.

In the submission made by Prosecutor Deniro Jones, the court heard that Peters, after discovering that his stereo set was missing, confronted Joseph, who denied knowledge of the missing item. However, after the matter was reported to police and an investigation was conducted, he admitted to the offence.

Jones further stated that Joseph, when questioned during the investigation in relation to the DVD player, could not say where it was taken to be repaired.

When he was asked by Magistrate Ann McLennan, who presided over the matter, what he had to say in relation to the charge, Joseph responded, “He getting it back,” meaning that the stolen items will be returned to Peters.

Joseph, who was said to be living on the same premises with Peters, was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment on each charge and the sentences will run concurrently.
