Canadian charity donates $3.6M foetal monitors to GPHC

Guyana Help the Kids (GHTK) organisation recently donated eight electronic foetal monitors valued about $3.6 million to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to better equip the staff to treat expectant mothers.

According to a press release, the equipment is used to detect abnormal heart rates in babies during the latter stages of pregnancy. Doctors and nurses are currently being trained to use the machines. This donation is particularly welcomed at the public hospital as it treats all high-risk pregnancies, amounting to about 8000 admissions per year and 5,500 deliveries, the release said.

The donation is the latest of several collaborations between the organisation and the hospital, specifically in obstetrics. Previous collaborations have seen the charity start a programme to train local doctors to become paediatricians as well as a programme to train nurses to specialise in caring for neonatal and new-born babies. The latter programme is still ongoing.

GHTK is a registered Canadian charity focused on decreasing neonatal and infant mortality in developing countries, particularly Guyana.
