Teen shot in groin in Sheriff St bandit attack

Bharrat Kellawan, 18, is nursing a gunshot wound after he was attacked by two bandits on Sunday.

Kellawan of 67 Sheriff and Garnett streets, Campbellville was shot to the groin around 21:50 hrs after he was approached by two masked men along Sheriff Street.

According to reports, Kellawan’s parents were the caretakers of a business on Sheriff Street and he would often help out when needed though he was not employed there.

Dhannarine, the youth’s father, told Stabroek News that his son had once again offered to help check out the security at the building and he had given him permission to do so. Dhannarine did not accompany him but remained at home with another friend.

“About ten minutes later I see him come running in,” Dhannarine related. He went on that his son’s pants was completely covered in blood and he fell on to the ground. “I ask, ‘wha’ happen? Wha’ happen?’ and he said call he mother quick to come help him,” Dhannarine said.

Kellawan told this newspaper that he had been heading towards the business when the men approached him and demanded his valuables. He added that both men had stockings over their faces, shrouding their identities.

A scuffle ensued between the trio and the gun subsequently went off, injuring Kellawan. The bandits quickly ran off after Kellawan was shot.

Kellawan was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) late Sunday night and was in severe pain. The bullet had also grazed his leg. He was later transferred to a private hospital and finally taken home where he is recuperating.

Dhannarine said he believed the attack was a planned one. According to the man, this is not the first time that two bandits had attempted to rob the family. Last week, he said, two men had approached him with guns demanding that he lead them to the Kellawan’s residence.

Dhannarine said he agreed but did not lead the men to his home as planned. He managed to escape and now thinks the same men attacked his son.

He expressed hope that the men are caught and was also thankful that his son managed to escape with his life.
