Linden man on bail after denying theft of gold detectors

After denying the charge of simple larceny read to him, Wayne Roberts was on Monday placed on $150,000 bail.

The charge against Roberts, 53, of 749 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, is that between November 24 and December 9, 2014, at lot 111 Miles, Mahdia, he stole two gold detectors, valued $600,000 belonging to Roger Hinds.

Roberts’ attorney, Latchmie Rahamat, asked for reasonable bail to be granted. Rahamat told the court that up to the time of the alleged theft, Roberts was an employee of Hinds. She added that she was informed by Roberts that during the time he worked with Hinds the gold detectors were indeed present but the premises were well secured and there was a security guard always present. She said Roberts was surprised at the allegation made against him in light of the tight security.

Prosecutor Jones had no objections to bail, which was later granted. Roberts is to make his next court appearance on January 9 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
