Man caught with cannabis gets fine, community service

After copping to possession of a small quantity of cannabis, a man was yesterday fined $15,000 and ordered to do community service.

Phillip St. Pius, 60, admitted that on November 9, at East La Penitence, Georgetown, he had 5 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat pleaded with Magistrate Ann McLennan, who heard the case at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, to be lenient with the man and to not jail him.

He also said St. Pius has steel in his left foot, which was caused by a car accident, and suggested this is why the man was using the cannabis.

As a result, St. Pius was fined $15,000 and ordered to do four weeks of community service, which is to be conducted at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

If he does not pay the fine and do the community service, he would be faced with a six-month-long prison sentence.
