Alberttown woman who died after c-section had bleeding in brain – PME finds

Kianna Richmond, who died two weeks after she underwent a caesarean surgery and delivered a baby at the Georgetown Public Hospital, died of bleeding in the brain, according to an autopsy report.

On Wednesday, Richmond, 39, of Light Street, Alberttown, died in the GPH’s intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she was being treated post-surgery.

According to her husband Dennis Richards, the post-mortem examination revealed that she haemorrhaged in the brain and also had a mass in her womb.

Richards told Stabroek News that his wife was admitted to the maternity ward at the GPH on December 7, to deliver her baby. He said that while his wife was in labour, doctors realized that “she had a great mass” which prevented vaginal delivery and opted to perform a caesarean surgery.

Moreover, Richards told this newspaper that after the surgery, Richmond was not responding and had to be admitted to the ICU. “She had high blood pressure,” he added. Additionally, Richards said, it was until December 13, that Richmond recovered enough to be transferred to the maternity ward. However, he stated that his wife relapsed on December 16 and was returned to the ICU, where she succumbed on December 17. “She had breathing problems and her lungs collapsed,” he added.

In a statement the GPH said that upon discerning a severe condition, doctors immediately performed a lower segment caesarean section and bilateral tubal ligation.

Richards said the children, including the baby boy are doing well. “The three-year-old asking for mommy.” he solemnly mentioned.

The mother of four will be laid to rest this week, Richards told this publication.
