In 1988 bauxite workers were given tax concessions

Dear Editor,

I was given an April/May 1988 edition of Guymine News during the festive season and it was one of the best gifts I could have received from a friend. It contained an article I was seeking for years ‘Tax Concessions For Overtime Work.’ Bauxite workers began receiving concessions for the first time on April 29, 1988. This article was probably so insignificant that it was tucked away at the bottom of the back page.

This concession was agreed to by the company (Guymine) and the Ministry of Finance. Tax was paid on the first 24 hours of overtime work and the remainder was tax free. This was later modified to tax-free overtime for the entire bauxite company and was then applied to the sugar industry.

As a good gesture to the hard-working bauxite workers, who have had this concession taken away and have witnessed tax concessions given to so many others, the Minister of Finance could retrieve these records and give the bauxite workers an ease on the taxes they are paying.

This concession will not affect the company’s wage bill in any way but would be a morale booster to every bauxite worker.

Yours faithfully,
Jocelyn Morian
