Trophy in honour of Terry Holder to be presented to most promising Guyanese cricketer annually

Dear Editor,

A trophy in honour of sports enthusiast and former broadcaster, Terry Holder, will be presented to the most promising Guyanese cricketer annually. Former West Indies spin wizard, Lance Gibbs is to organize the award.

This was revealed on Saturday on a special broadcast organized by Ron Bobb-Semple on his Saturday show to pay tribute to Terry Holder, former broadcaster and sports enthusiast who died last Wednesday at his home.

The panel on the programme comprised Holder’s eldest child, Dawn, his close friend and former colleague, Vic Insanally, journalist Enrico Woolford, and Gibbs, a close friend.

Insanally recounted Holder’s journalistic/broadcasting and managerial experience and his important role in improving  broadcasting in the region, while Woolford spoke of Terry’s important role in improving journalism while he served as Head of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU)  in Barbados for five years.

The former world record holder for the most Test wickets, said that Terry was such a keen cricket fan he once advised him that he was bowling too quickly for a spin bowler. Gibbs admitted that he had that problem because he had to push through the ball while playing League cricket because the conditions in England were different from Bourda and other grounds in the West Indies.

Dawn Holder said her father was the most important person in her life who discussed sports, broadcasting and life generally with her. She said he was not only a father, but her best friend as well.

Terry, besides playing an important role as an administrator at the Guyana Broadcasting Service (GBS) where he served as General Manager, and Head of CBU, was a sports enthusiast and served as PRO to the Guyana Cricket Board for several years.

It was felt by the panel on Bobb-Semple’s radio programme that it was fitting for him to be honoured for his contribution and Lance suggested naming a trophy in his honour and pledged to administer its implementation.

Holder’s funeral will take place on Wednesday.

Yours faithfully,
