Parliamentarians should separate Mandela’s political work as prisoner from that as president

Dear Editor,

I read with surprise of parliament honouring the work of Mr Nelson Mandela. While I fully support the idea I think that all political parties should separate Mr Mandela’s political work as a prisoner from his political work as a president, for Guyana to benefit.

It is popular opinion that with this composition of parliamentarians an opportunity now exists for knowledge and prosperity for all to be realized. It is now left to the integrity of the parliamentarians to make it possible to begin the process of reconciliation in the sense of finding a satisfactory way of dealing with opposing facts and ideas in parliament.

I suggest that parliamentarians get the speech Mr Mandela made after observing that a part of his staff had left and others were packing to leave on his first day at work as president. In that speech Mr Mandela spoke from his heart as he always did.

 Yours faithfully,

Lennox A Whyte
