Leaders have to work for the common good

Dear Editor,

The PPP desperately tries to present itself as the voice of the poor and the working class.  Yet we may ask what kind of activism for the poor is this when the PPP trash most opportunities to implement public policies to directly benefit the poorest of the poor?

Any government at the highest levels should have within its ranks people who are on a mission to be do the right thing for the people regardless of the personal cost; that is public service.  They must be committed to increasing the share value for their shareholders (the people) and contribute directly to expanding opportunities for those who need it the most.

Leaders have to be proactive and work for the common good without selfish interest.  Leaders hold the ignition key to the nation’s growth and prosperity, as people will follow the standards set by the leaders. Let us for one moment assume that the PPP ministers are the stock of leadership in Guyana.  Would the people want to follow them?

Compassionate leaders promote equality and fairness in the nation. Can we describe the action of a senior government official who allegedly caused a serious vehicular accident as fair?  Rather than reach out to those in the trench, he makes a call, open his door and jumps into a waiting vehicle leaving the scene of an accident appearing to have no care for those in the muddied water whom his vehicle put there. It is ok to look after oneself and totally ignore the pains of the other party?

What I find most disgusting is that the major religious bodies, be they Christian, Islamic or Hindu have failed to add their voices to condemn such behaviour.  None of these religious leaders have condemned the young girls and boys as they engage in unbecoming acts that have total disregard for public values.

As a Hindu I particularly call out the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha for their double standards on these major lapses in morality.  This wanton disregard by the leaders in the nation for the people, their property and their peace of mind must be condemned.  The Dharmic Sabha must not only find a voice to condemn the youths when the firecrackers come out.

But I fail to understand why the new morality in Guyana allows for some to be more equal than others.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Budhoo
