Vehicles should be fitted with car cams

Dear Editor,

In 2010 a vehicle breached the traffic lights and hit my vehicle. However, although I was not the party in the wrong, I was charged just because the other person knew persons at the police station. For the first time in my life I was placed in the lockups. The irony was that I had called the police because I knew I was not at fault.

I have learned my lesson. I immediately purchased a car cam and it has been serving me well.

I recommend that it be made compulsory for every vehicle to be fitted with cameras. The undisputed benefits would be:

When everyone know that they are being watched they will not risk breaking the rules.

The police will have no problems in prosecuting.

Time and money will be saved.

The innocent will not suffer like me because of police corruption.

Insurance companies will save millions.

There will be much more discipline on our roadways.

Most important – hundreds of lives and millions of dollars would be saved.

Police corruption will be greatly reduced.

Road safety would truly become everybody’s business.

Traffic ranks would have more time to concentrate on more important tasks, such as regulating traffic at busy junctions, etc.

I hope that this proposal will be presented and soberly discussed at the conference now in session.

Yours faithfully,

Shyam Doodnauth
