Gov’t must respect constitutional role of local democratic organs

Dear Editor,

I join Mr Clinton Urling in congratulating Stabroek News for its initiative to give daily front page coverage to the need for the early convening of local government elections and for issues relating to local democracy.

In this regard perhaps even more important than the holding of these elections is for the government to respect the constitutional role of local democratic organs (municipalities, NDCs and RDCs) or their authority and autonomy. The Local Government Minister is asked to provide a single reason why he has not issued the Commencement Order to bring into being the Local Government Commission even though it is almost nine months since the legislation was enacted for its creation.

Yours faithfully,
Ronald Bulkan
