Intolerable noise nuisance in Essequibo

Dear Editor,

Since the opening of a new drinking spot, allegedly by an employee of Banks DIH Ltd, in a privately owned business complex aback of a gas station on the Essequibo Coast, serious noise nuisance has been affecting a large number of families.

The pub became operational from Mother’s Day and since than from between 9 to 10 am to 3 am the next day, it is non-stop music at full blast, much to the annoyance of residents who cannot endure it.

During the business sessions, the DJ keeps pounding out “With the compliments of Banks DIH…” while appealing for public support. It is well known that Banks DIH itself does not have anything to do with the pub but allegedly its employee pays a rental to keep it going in his personal capacity.

The affected residents including myself are aware that the filing of a lot of papers from several departments in the district is necessary before permission is granted by a magistrate for music to be played at weddings, bar-b-ques, etc in keeping with the law. From our knowledge, the magistrate would state the duration of time when the music can be played with the advisory not to go beyond this as thereafter the police can intervene. But in relation to this pub, we believe that no application for permission to have music on the premises was ever made, let alone granted.

No one is above the law, but it becomes useless whenever it cannot be enforced to protect society. Laxity in the enforcement of the law has contributed significantly to an upsurge in lawlessness. What goes for one must apply to all and for the law to be violated in such a presumptious manner does not speak well for the law-enforcement agencies.

Police ranks, especially those on night patrol, can be seen in the pub enjoying themselves, but for reasons best known to them this is not treated as an offence with their modus operandi making a mockery of the call by the Minister of Home Affairs for swift action to be taken.

Nothing is wrong with someone being engaged in an activity to augment his income, but it must be done within the confines of the law.

Some form of positive action is urgently needed to exterminate this nuisance once and for all.

Yours faithfully,
