Pickup which had hit car into trench sped away

Dear Editor,

I witnessed one of the most horrific incidents while standing on the eastern side of the La Grange Public Road yesterday evening at about 6.10 pm.

A red Nissan double cab pickup was racing down the road coming behind a white Toyota Corolla from the southerly direction.

The Toyota car had its left indicator on from a good distance and then as the car turned into Palmer Street, the red pickup hit the car and it went overboard and was turned over. The red pickup then sped away leaving the occupants of the car in the trench.

The police, however, did not arrive on the scene until 8.30pm. Some public-spirited citizens made better efforts than the police ever would to rescue the occupants of the car and also discovered the drunken driver and his red pickup (with the dented front) at the New Harmony access road currently under construction, before you enter Goed Fortuin, in the dark of the road.

I understand from one of the spectators on the road last evening that the La Grange police are hinting that they did not have a breathalyzer kit to test the alcohol level in the driver of the pickup truck.

Yours faithfully,
