Caribbean Premier League should be used to get the anti-suicide message out there

Dear Editor,

The Caribbean Premier League is here. And since The Caribbean Voice strongly believes in the multi-sectoral approach to dealing with suicide and related issues, we strongly urge the CPL organizers, Limacol, cricketing authorities and the Minister of Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, to capitalize on this sports festival to get the messages out there. There are so many ways in which this can be done:

* Banners around the stadium

* Intermittent taped messages from sports stars and other Guyanese VIPs and celebrities interspersing the commentary

* Armbands worn by the Guyanese team with an explanation provided by commentators

* Sale of car stickers with anti-suicide, anti-domestic abuse and other related messages. Each set of stickers can carry a photo of a Guyanese team member

* 30 seconds PSAs by members of the Guyana cricket team to be played by local radio and TV stations as a public service

* Team members do media interviews talking about suicide, domestic abuse, teenage pregnancy and related issues.

We are certain that the relevant authorities can come up with other measures. The point is that cricket mania provides a perfect opportunity to get the right information and messages out nationwide.

Yours faithfully,

Norkah Carter
