Road contractor does not seem to have resources to build a proper shed, toilet facility for workers

Dear Editor,

I make reference to my letter dated July 7, 2014, published on July 8 with respect to the deplorable state of the roads in Area Q, Turkeyen (‘Is there a plan for Area Q Turkeyen Road?’). The residents were more than pleased when a reporter from your publication visited our community and verified the disgraceful state of the roads, and vindicated my description on the pristine state of the roads in Pradoville 1. A few days after my letter, your newspaper carried a full article describing not only the state of the roads, but also the agony and frustration that residents in Area Q have to endure, caused by the neglect and vindictiveness of those responsible for public works.

Editor, a few days after the publication of your article, a group of 4 men erected a small shed on the main street, made of discarded wooden materials and some old zinc sheets, including an out-house latrine, made of 4 old zinc sheets; all intended to be the office of a Site Project Engineer for a contractor who residents have been advised was awarded a contract to repair the roads. The shed and outhouse were built almost 6 weeks ago, and about the same time a load of sand and one of loam have been deposited next to the shed. That’s all the work that has been done to quell the frustration of residents. It’s obvious that the contractor to whom the contract was awarded does not have the resources to even build a proper shed, and more so a proper toilet facility for its workers, so residents should brace themselves for a substandard road, if and whenever repairs are effected to it.

In the meantime, Editor, the agony of traversing deep craters filled with mud and water continues whenever it rains. This is what residents who pay high rates and taxes to the government have to endure.

Yours faithfully,

Amitabh S Singh
