Dr Waller helps to set up eye banks in underdeveloped countries

Dear Editor,

I must commend your reporter for the well-researched article on cornea transplants in the August 20 edition of your newspaper.

However, I would like to draw your reader’s attention to the following facts that were missed:

1. Dr Stephen G Waller who was instrumental in this cornea transplant initiative is a retired Colonel of the US Air Force Medical Corps. He is an ophthalmologist with a Fellowship from Harvard in Cornea. Besides research and many publications, his current mission is to help in setting up eye banks in underdeveloped countries. He was in Guyana earlier this year and once he was satisfied about the hospital and Dr Neeraj Jain’s capabilities, he returned with the corneas donated by several American eye banks.

2. Dr Rahul Jindal contributed by visualizing the entire concept and getting Dr Waller interested in the project.

3. This was once again a project undertaken by Mr George Subraj of Zara Realty who has been organizing renal transplants in Guyana for the last few years along with Dr Rahul Jindal, Transplant Surgeon, and his team including Dr Stephen Guy and others.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Madhu P Singh
