Everyone should be vigilant

Dear Editor,

Despite the daily grim news which features so often in the media, (gun crimes, murders, domestic violence, vehicle-manslaughter, etc) one cannot help feeling saddened at the recent murder of a businessman and injury to his wife by bandits. They were gunned down at a Stop sign on Regent and Vlissengen roads in broad daylight, and in an area where security cameras are supposed to be – not omitting the Office of the President in the said vicinity.

I wonder whether these perpetrators are on a drugs ‘high’ when they snuff out a person’s life without mercy. Just a few days ago two teenagers robbed and brutalised an 81-year-old woman, breaking her hand in the process and burning the house down.

It is either that the penalty for these crimes is not viewed as a deterrent or as aforesaid their mental state is one of temporary insanity. To law-abiding citizens I say we must support the police as they fight this scourge in the land; and let us all be vigilant.

 Yours faithfully,
