Spaniard and Nigerian being held in Golden Grove police station

Dear Editor,

A few days ago duties called me to the Golden Grove Police Station. On my arrival, I was quite amazed at the number of persons being held there. Even more amazing were the number of hands that went up trying to get my attention.

But among the many faces two have remained in my mind’s eye since then. The faces were those of a national from Spain who claimed to have been held there for approximately six months, and a Nigerian national who claimed to have been held there for the past four months.

From what was gathered, they also claim that their only crime was not having any legal papers. If these claims are true, then can a suggestion be made, that these men be made to feel at the least, a little more comfortable and treated a little bit more fairly, and better than animals in a cage?

These men are being denied basic essentials like sunlight and exercise. They should therefore either be sent back to their respective countries, or be given the same kind of freedom the Chinese are enjoying. The Chinese are invading our country more and more with rights and privileges to exploit indigenous peoples and practising destructive deforestation with nothing sustainable about it.

Those with responsibility for matters of this nature, should look at this embarrassing situation immediately.

Yours faithfully,
Penny Atkinson
