Bus stops on new East Bank road should be repositioned

Dear Editor,

As you may be aware, the newly built eastern carriageway road on the East Bank of Demerara, between Little Diamond and Prospect was opened to traffic recently. Except for lighting, which may be in the works, the road appears to carry all the necessary markings for safe use by both vehicles and pedestrians. However, the position of the pedestrian crossings relative to the bus stops poses some risks for persons who may attempt to use the crossings if a bus has stopped at the prescribed marking, partially blocking the vision of oncoming vehicles. This applies to both the southern and northern bound lanes.

I know that we all thought that one should not cross the road from behind (in front in this case) of a stationary vehicle, but there is always the chance of someone making a mistake, and the position of the bus stops heightens this possibility.

Editor, I am not a traffic expert, but I believe that if the bus stops on both lanes are repositioned on the other side of the pedestrian crossings, this may help to reduce the risk of an accident.

I trust that the authorities would give some consideration to this observation.

Yours faithfully,
Derick Lowe
