The annual GuyExpo is undeniably a highly anticipated event that attracts hundreds of people from all sections of the Guyanese society.
Naturally, children formed a sizeable portion of the hundreds in attendance at this year’s event. The sheer numbers of attendees would give the organizers every reason to claim a successful event.
There were, however, two issues that left me feeling very disheartened and in bewilderment about the organizers’ competence in staging events which are designed as family affairs. The first is a recurring situation. Upon entering the venue one is greeted with a clash of noise emanating from the various individual booths erected primarily by the major beverage companies. The problem arises when persons seek to establish dominance by playing their sound systems – all at once – at unbelievably high decibel levels. The resulting cacophony forces one to retreat in search of less hazardous areas.
The second issue is perhaps more disturbing and leaves one to ponder the mindset and quality of thought of the GuyExpo organizers. The planned entertainment offering on Saturday night supports my concern. Some of the acts featured performances that were clearly aimed at a very adult audience. The lyrics, the dancing, were inappropriate for youngsters. And there were many there, looking on in amazement.
How could the organizers with all their years of experience allow such adult oriented entertainment be shown in the presence of children? So happy now that I decided to leave my kids at home!
