I refer to one of the dailies that reported on the Digicel Open Golf Classic, played last weekend at the Lusignan Golf course, ECD.
“Once again and for the fifth time, Avinash Persaud adorned himself in glory, when he dethroned his younger brother and defending champion Avinder Kishore to take the top prize…”
Persaud had a net 140 and gross 144 to come away victorious (His gross score won him this competition – not his net). He won, in other words because he outscored the field – fewer strokes overall).
On the distaff side, the report says that defending champion Christine Sukhram’s long reign came to an end, thanks to the superb efforts of her nemesis, Joann Deo, who finished with a 67/87, to take the top prize (her gross being 87).
This is what has me confused and I want to know what really is the method used to declare who is champion. I assume it is the best gross. The breakdown here is: Sukhram (74/83) and Shanella Webster (72/94); Joann sits inbetween at 67/87. So the best gross is Christine Sukhram’s. How come she is not champion?
Let me order the best gross for simplicity – 83, 87 and 94 – this means that the person among the females who did best was Christine. She won whether or not she was crowned.
I hope that this will be clarified by someone (the sponsors, the club or the reporter).
