All sides should continue to play by the democratic rules

Dear Editor,

With little experience in the Speaker’s job Mr Raphael Trotman has been saddled with tremendous responsibilities unprecedented in Guyana’s history. So far he seems to be holding up well. He should remember that in his hands lies the security, peace and wellbeing of a tortured nation with a fragile democracy.

Outsiders in our midst are motivated and care eternally for their long-term interests. Who looks out and safeguards ours are not in doubt. Best wishes to the President, opposition leaders and the Speaker in their talks.

With strong convictions that we must devolve into a Federal Republic for racial equality to best facilitate ethnic security, all the Speaker’s decisions in the next few months will be critical. So far all sides are playing by the democratic rules adumbrated in our country’s constitution. Let’s keep it this way to remain a single country. We have too much in common which cannot be destroyed.

Yours faithfully,

Sultan Mohamed
