If Obama prorogued Congress there would be uproar

Dear Editor,

Let us imagine the news today in the United States is that President Obama prorogued Congress according to the constitution, and 535 members of Congress could not meet. The country would go into uproar. There would be wall to wall coverage in the media denouncing President Obama as a dictator.

Obama’s response would then be that he acted fully within the powers given to him in the constitution. Imagine he went on to say: ‘Now they have to negotiate on my terms. And if they agree I will recall Congress. If they don’t the constitution allows me to do another prorogation for another six months. All of this is fully within my powers. And still they accuse me of being a dictator. They still say I acted illegally.’

Ravi Dev (writing under the name Sultan) and using many other pen names says the Constitution of Guyana is the law of the land. Love it or hate it, it is the law and it must be followed, while Mr Ramotar should never be accused of being a dictator.

Guyanese can choose whether to fight for genuine democracy. One group of bloggers makes one point abundantly clear. The constitution is denounced or praised depending on who is in power.

Yours faithfully,
