Dear Editor,
It is once again the time of the year when we all look forward to the season of caring and sharing. However, a dark cloud is draped over our nation, and therefore we must come together and say a prayer for this beloved country of ours.
Our public servants continue to face yearly impositions by our government. For a whole year there could have been negotiations with the Guyana Public Service Union, and we are in the twelfth month, yet still there are no signs of negotiations.
The prorogation of Guyana’s Parliament has lent credence to the claim that all is not well for the democracy that the late Dr Cheddi Jagan fought so hard and long for; now it has been derailed.
The opposition has underperformed and has failed the people miserably.
The hope and aspirations of our future must be to build a strong and solid nation for the next generation; we can only achieve this by working together in the interest of all the people.
The political situation has bred suspicion, and it is for all right-thinking Guyanese to arise and take a stand, least we stumble and perish.
As we all know Guyana is a blessed nation within the potential to make us all prosperous and comfortable, but the reality is that we remain poor because politics is part of our everyday living.
There is too much disunity, acrimony and animosity, and while there is talk about dialogue and the way forward we still have to face the reality that the poor have got poorer, while the rich have become richer. We fool ourselves into believing that our politicians can do it alone.
To make development work we have to ensure we hold our elected representatives more responsive and responsible for their actions. We cannot sit and hope that they have all the answers for our woes; we must rise above our differences and unite to build a better Guyana, so the next generation can be proud of the legacy we have left behind.
So on the eve of the festive season, let us use this opportunity to bridge our differences and live in cohesion. May our season be blessed with peace and goodwill.
