Where can one get the fertilizer for hydroponic farming?

Dear Editor,

Partners of the Americas (Partners) and Caribbean Self-Reliance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture is promoting the building of hydroponic shade houses all over the country.

In June this year the Hydroponic Extension Officer, the field officer for Leguan and two other persons visited me.

They measured out the space for the shade house and gave me useful information. Partners wanted to build the shade house. I informed them that I was out of the country for two weeks in July. After my return I heard only that the responsible person was on vacation and if I wanted I could build the shade house alone. I did this in September.

Editor, the problem is now not to get the special nutrition to fertilize the hydroponic plants. It seems so that no agricentre or chemical distributors in this country sell this product or can give me information about where in Guyana I can buy it.

I sent messages through the field officer, made phone calls and sent emails, and again I didn’t get any answers. It seems that only big commercial farmers and government institutions (eg, schools) get this special fertilizer and other help.

I have already spent more than $200,000 on my shade house. Nevertheless, I believe further on that hydroponic farming will have a future in the country. What I need now is help and the information where I can buy the fertilizer.

Yours faithfully,

Hans Buer
